Forte Montecchio is a fortress built shortly before the First World War. It remained in use until after the Second World War and is one of the best-preserved fortresses in Europe.
Its good condition is also due to the fact that, although it was used in both World Wars, the fortress only saw combat for two days. Towards the end of the Second World War, Italian partisans captured the fortress. They aimed the cannons at the German occupiers and thus forced an agreement to withdraw.
Particularly impressive are the massive gun turrets, which are also well-preserved. During the guided tour, these can still be adjusted using mechanical cranks.
Visits are only possible with a guided tour (as of 2026). Current opening hours can be found on the website of the fort. Larger groups can also request a separate guided tour.
A visit to Forte Montecchio can also be well combined with a visit to the nearby ruins of the 17th-century Spanish Forte di Fuentes.
The fort is located about a 15-minute drive from the campsite on the outskirts of Colico.
